FAU among the top performers in the 2015 QS World University Rankings by Subject
In 2015, FAU is once again ranked among the top universities in research and teaching compared with other universities around the world. 13 subjects from the humanities, sciences, medicine and engineering are among the best 300 worldwide and materials science was once again ranked in the top 100. Competition was fierce. QS Quacquarelli Symonds, an established provider of specialist higher education and careers information and global rankings, assessed 3551 universities and produced a ranking of the top institutions according to individual disciplines.
This year, FAU, which is the second-largest university in Bavaria and one of the leading research universities in Germany, is listed among the top 150 institutions in chemistry, chemical engineering, pharmacy and pharmacology. In astronomy, linguistics, medicine and physics, it is ranked among the best 200. Materials science is ranked among the top 100 worldwide, as it was in 2014. In terms of the subjects on offer, FAU is considered one of the best 300 in biology, electrical engineering, computer science, mechanical engineering, modern languages and mathematics.
In comparison with other universities in Germany, five of FAU’s disciplines are ranked among the top 10: materials science (fourth), chemical engineering (sixth), electrical engineering (eighth), mechanical engineering (ninth) and pharmacy and pharmacology (tenth).
This means that, compared to last year, four additional disciplines are represented in the ranking. The QS ranking by subject compares universities in categories such as academic reputation, citations per paper, and the productivity and impact of the published work of scientists. In the category of frequently cited publications, FAU researchers from mechanical engineering, medicine, chemistry and chemical engineering did particularly well.
For the employer reputation category QS asks employers worldwide to assess the universities to give an indication of how much demand there is for graduates of a given university on the job market. FAU graduates from the disciplines of physics, astronomy, linguistics and mathematics are particularly sought after by employers.
