Physikalisches Kolloquium: Dr. Paul Bennet – Proper Motions in and beyond the Local Group of Galaxies

Titel: Proper Motions in and beyond the Local Group of Galaxies

Abstract:
Proper motions are the on sky motions of astronomical objects. Unlike line of sight velocities, that can be readily obtained from spectroscopy, proper motions are very difficult to determine for most objects requiring extremely precise measurements of position in the sky separated by many years. This means, for most objects, they are the final components of position velocity information to be obtained. With full 6D position-velocity information we can tell not only the present of an object but use its trajectory to understand its past and future. This allows us to examine many problems in astrophysics and physics more broadly, such as when and where do galaxies stop forming new stars and what is the dark matter content of the Milky Way? It also gives insight in the nature of dark matter models including if dark matter is self-interacting or a purely non-interactive particle.
